5/30/2023 0 Comments Ellen hopkins glass series![]() ![]() ![]() Kristina is once again a complex and relatable protagonist, and the reader is likely to be drawn in by her struggles and her determination to overcome her addiction. Ellen Hopkins does an excellent job of exploring the psychological and emotional toll that addiction can take on a person, and she also provides a realistic portrayal of the challenges and setbacks that can accompany the road to recovery. One of the standout elements of "Glass" is its unflinching look at the reality of addiction and recovery. The format also helps to build a sense of rhythm and momentum that is often absent from more conventional novels. Like the previous books in the series, "Glass" is told in free-verse poetry, which allows Ellen Hopkins to convey Kristina's thoughts and feelings in a powerful and immediate way. ![]() It was published in 2007 and continues the story of Kristina, a teenage girl who is struggling to overcome her addiction to crystal meth. "Glass" is the third novel in the "Crank" series by Ellen Hopkins. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() More importantly though, its depictions of the soul-destroying insanity of warfare have become part of our modern response to war-among those of us both for and against any particular conflict-without us necessarily realizing how we have come to absorb these attitudes. There is no telling how many readers and leaders were moved by the book to become anti-militaristic. ![]() It's the one fictional work of the era that we might say has affected history. When we say "influential", we don't mean only in the book's influence on other authors (although it did set the standard for writing about war in the twentieth century), but in its impact on the world's people and even on their governments. Remarque was a great and popular writer for more than four decades, but will be remembered always for his first gigantically influential novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. ![]() Since the days of conquistador Hern n Cort s, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. ![]() The #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, named one of the best books of the year by The Boston Globe and National Geographic: acclaimed journalist Douglas Preston takes readers on a true adventure deep into the Honduran rainforest in this riveting narrative about the discovery of a lost civilization - culminating in a stunning medical mystery. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Sweetest Kulu by Celina Kalluk![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The newborn is portrayed as part of a marvelous, intricate web of relationships within the natural world, lazing in the soft grass or snuggling up to the arctic hare. Debut author (and lauded Inuit throat singer) Celina Kalluk employs a warm narrative voice to address the child directly, inviting young readers to “dream a little” along with Kulu. Lastly, the Land itself gives a gift: “Never be lazy, beloved Kulu, because your Land is a place of bright ideas.” One by one they give Kulu advice and gifts: the Arctic Hare shows love, the Arctic Char gives tenderness, the Caribou bestows patience, and the Polar Bear offers gentleness and respect for all animals. At the Wind’s command, a number of wise creatures bestow their blessings upon the child. First, the Sun shines “so bright and stayed through the night, giving you blankets and ribbons of warm light.” Next, the Wind arrives with its music, and invites the wider world to come and meet the newborn. When baby Kulu is born, all of the Arctic world welcomes the new child. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments After dark murakami review![]() Around this central narrative, Murakami gives us a taste of the seedier side of urban nightlife, including an assault on a Chinese prostitute and a potential revenge attack by pimps/gangsters, repeatedly being taken in via a surreal bird’s eye view of proceedings. Charting one night (indicated by chapter headings with a time-advancing clock) in the intertwining lives of various big city dwellers, the author paints (at the tale’s centre) a beautifully fragile portrait of the budding friendship between two unassuming young protagonists, the 19-year old Mari, pining for a seemingly lost relationship with her older, more glamorous sister (Eri), and the carefree trombone-playing student, Takahashi, who spends his nights jamming with his musician friends. ![]() As I work my way through the works of Haruki Murakami, this 2004 short novel, running to around 200 pages, has (thus far, at least) provided the most 'perfectly formed’ blend of surreal elements, affecting characterisations and resolved narrative. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The screwtape letters by cs lewis![]() ![]() You cannot read this book and not think of how extremely pertinent it is to your life. ![]() In fact, they seem to prefer the more subtle means of leading people astray, as they sense that this is a more hidden and thus secure way to accomplish their ultimate design. Ultimately, the tempters in this story do not care what sins are committed by their subjects - so long as they accomplish their goal of separating people from God, and leading them to the adversary. Instead, the tempters focus on much more subtle forms of sins - vanity, pride, distraction, insincerity, forgetting God, and how these can achieve the same effect as more obvious sins. What is truly excellent about the book, though, is that the cunning plans are not centered around obvious sins, that so often are what we think about when we think about temptation and sin. ![]() Through the letters, you are constantly reminded and made to think about how the adversary tempts us. In the letters, Screwtape gives Wormwood adivce and counsel on how to best tempt his "subject" - a young man who converts to Christianity, and then falls in love with a Christian woman. For those who have not read it, the book is written as a compilation of letters from a "tempter," Screwtape, to his nephew, a "junior tempter" named Wormwoood. I love this book - it really makes you think. ![]() ![]() Works really well to defend any sort of generalized statements the author makes, right?īecause in the conclusion part, the author, employing quite intimidating words said: ". as always, the personality traits mentioned in this book are generalizations - there are always exceptions to the rule and ultimately everyone is individual." Literally, any statement she made can be considered not guilty given that, the author, at the very beginning of the book stated: ". "It's just a lot of guys wished their past mistakes, bad habits, etc were forgotten.", for instance. There are examples the author talked about which are relatable. ![]() ![]() It is true that even speaking against oppression when it is culturally embedded can be a huge act of bravery, but tolerating the oppression is ANYTHING BUT STRENGTH! Moreover, the way she portrayed the inability to protest against systematic oppression caused by patriarchy is problematic as well. ![]() Starting from the author's ignorance or the tendency of not paying enough attention to alternative sexualities to lack of knowledge about depression. There are so many things wrong with the book. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments War with the Newts by Karel Čapek![]() ![]() ‘Quirky’ – wash my mouth out – is probably how a committee of studio executives would describe a major motion picture adaptation of War with the Newts. However the absence of the first contents page in this volume seemed to go beyond quirky. (Contrast with the Penguin Decades, all reset and with new introductions.) No doubt cost control is a part of this, and I’d rather have the books like this than not at all. And what a series it is! Three hits out of three so far makes me sound like a bit of an uncritical fanboy, so I had better point out that I was disappointed by the lack of introductions or other critical apparatus to the ten books in the series, and the fact that most had not been reset but used the old type from earlier editions. M and R Weatherall, 1937) is published as part of Penguin’s Central European Classics series. Why haven’t people been pressing Karel Čapek’s War with the Newts on me since I was old enough to read? (Yes, you see: it’s all your fault.) In fairness, people who did know the book were enthusiastic when I said I was reading it. ![]() ![]() Every so often a book comes along that leaves you dizzy with wonder that you haven’t read it before. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty![]() ![]() While the three sisters were witty and funny and all that I enjoy about her books, the story line left me drifting a bit and honestly I can not even tell you what the big plot moment was. Three Wishes is an older title for Moriarty and I felt the difference in her character development. Yes, Moriarty of The Husband’s Secret, Big, Little Lies, and What Alice Forgot. Of course I chose this read because it is Moriarty. When all else seems to be falling apart…they can always count on each other. Liane Moriarty is the Australian author of seven internationally best-selling novels, including Three Wishes, The Last Anniversary, What Alice Forgot, The Hypnotists Love Story and the 1 New York Times bestsellers, The Husbands Secret, Big Little Lies and Truly Madly Guilty. Gemma is finally considering staying in a relationship longer than 6 months. Lyn views life as a check list as she marks things off her to do list day by dayĬat is dealing with painful facts about her marriage ![]() ![]() While they are a force to be reckoned with, each carries her own burden… Alone, each is stunning, together, they turn heads constantly. Lyn, Cat, and Gemma are thirty-three year old triplets. Her protagonists are strong three-dimensional women who are funny, witty, and I usually want to be their friend. I have an author crush on Liane Moriarty. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice.
